Some people prepare their notes for speaking in public by using a tablet or other device; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. Murphy's law is sure to strike and leave you with a dead battery, a stolen device or some other catastrophe. Be safe and write your remarks on index cards as well as keeping them on your mobile device.

If you skip a sentence during your speech, keep on going. Stopping and returning to the sentence may ruin the entire speech. In addition, others are unlikely to recognize the omission if you don't draw attention to the issue.

Make sure that the beginning of your speech is a moment to relax. Greet and address your audience. Then pause for three seconds. This gives them a chance to focus on you, while you get a moment to transform your nervous energy into enthusiasm for the material you are about to deliver.

Never assume that you are going in front of a hostile audience. They are giving you their time and attention. They want to be informed, captivated, entertained and moved. Visualize them clapping for you, because they probably hope you give them reason to do just that at some point.

Arrive half an hour early for your speaking engagement so that you can familiarize yourself with the room. Determine where you will be during the presentation. Figure out what path you will take to get to the podium. Be sure to have a glass of water placed on the podium. By taking care of these small details, you will feel more comfortable while speaking.

Always dress to impress. You will speak more confidently, if you are dressed nicely. Wear a tie if you are a man to get the attention of the audience focused on your face.

Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages prior to making your speech even if they are available at the event at which you are speaking. While alcohol may relax you, you do not want to appear inebriated when you make your speech. You may forget what you want to say, slur your speech, inadvertently insult someone or even become sick in the midst of speaking if you drink too much. Save the liquor for your post-speech celebration.

Consider your appearance. The audience is not likely to listen to you when your state of dress or grooming skills are distracting. Consider your audience when you think about what you are going to wear. Suits work well in for most speeches, but consider something more casual when speaking to younger audiences.

Now you must have some idea about how people can feel so at ease with public speaking. If you practice these ideas, you will learn how to be comfortable as well. Take notes and begin to practice. This skill is worth the effort to learn. Then, you can apply it in your life.
